Distance learning and a law degree: what to check before you enroll
Remote study made law school reachable for a lot of people. It also made it easy to enroll in something that does not do what you assumed.
Remote instruction stopped being an emergency measure and became a permanent option, in legal education as everywhere else. For a lot of capable people, it is the only reason the degree is reachable at all.
It also introduced a category of expensive mistake. Here is what to establish before you sign anything.
Check the eligibility rule, not the marketing
CDTA’s Distance Learning Option is available to students who live fifty miles or more from the Indio campus. It lets you obtain your J.D. while completing most of your studies from home, and the platform is available around the clock, seven days a week.
Fifty miles is a specific number and the school makes the measurement. Confirm your own eligibility with the Admissions Office before you plan around it.
Read the method of instruction disclosure
The State Bar of California requires every registered law school to disclose its method of instruction. CDTA’s reads: the method of instruction at this law school for the Juris Doctor degree program is principally in physical classroom facilities.
That is not a contradiction of the distance option, but it is the sentence that tells you what the program fundamentally is. Ask which components require attendance in person.
Check what the degree qualifies you for
This matters more than anything else on the page, and it applies to every student at a registered unaccredited California law school, distance or otherwise.
Study at, or graduation from, this law school may not qualify a student to take the bar examination or to satisfy the requirements for admission to practice in jurisdictions other than California. If you intend to practice in another state, contact that state’s admitting authority before you enroll, not after you graduate.
Check the examination requirements
Distance students face the same First-Year Law Students’ Examination requirement as students on campus. Pass it within three administrations after becoming eligible and you keep credit for all law study completed. Fail to, and you must be disqualified from the program.
Ask what preparation is included in tuition. At CDTA that is internal course reviews, AdaptiBar in the first year, and ExamSoft for every examination you sit.
The real test of a remote program
Not the platform. The people. Whether an instructor answers when you are stuck at nine on a Tuesday, and whether there is a cohort you can study with rather than a login you can access.
Ask a current student that question, not the website.
The Registrar answers them directly rather than routing you through a form funnel. Call (760) 342-0900 or send a message.
